Next Monday, 17 May, is World Telecommunication and Information Day. So this Sunday afternoon, let’s talk about something about telecommunications.
What is Morse Code?Morse code is a method used in telecommunication to encode text characters as standardized sequences of two different signal durations, called dots and dashes. International Morse Code, also known as Continental Morse Code, encodes the 26 English letters. A through Z, some non-English letters, the Arabic numerals, a small set of punctuation, and procedural signals.
Who Invented Morse Code?
Morse code is named after Samuel Morse, an inventor of the telegraph. Samuel Morse and his assistant Alfred Vail are known as the inventors of the Morse code.
When Was Morse Code Invented?Morse code developed in the 1830s then advanced in the 1840s.
What is Morse Code Used For?In the past, Morse code had extensive usage, especially in the military. Although Morse code has a limited usage area today, it is still being used in aviation, amateur radio activities, and assistive technology (AT).
How to Use Morse Code?Morse code can be used in various ways, such as with pen and paper or with the aid of light and sound. Even, it can be used with the parts of the body like eyes or fingers.
Telegraph key and sounder. The signal is”on” when the knob is pressed, and “off” when it is released. The length and timing of dots and dashes are entirely controlled by the telegraphist.
How to Translate Morse Code?If you’d like to translate or decipher Morse code and if you do not know how to read Morse code, you can use Morse Code Translator online. With the Morse Decoder, you can decode Morse code and read English text easily.
By the way, Siri can translate Morse Code.

For many years, spy thrillers seemed mired in Cold War politics, even as the Cold War itself faded into memory. Hollywood films like Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) and, most recently, Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) all continue to use the Cold War as a backdrop.

Morse code was invented by an American called Samuel Finley Breese Morse, (1791-1872). He was not only an inventor but also a famous painter.
Before the invention of the telegraph, most messages that had to be sent over long distances were carried by messengers who memorized them or carried them in writing. These messages could be delivered no faster than the fastest horse. Messages could also be sent visually, using flags and later, mechanical systems called semaphore telegraphs, but these systems required the receiver to be close enough to see the sender, and could not be used at night.

The World Telecommunications Day is in tight connections with the International Telegraph Union (ITU), the committee formed in 1865 to support the emerging communication methods of the time. ITU was present throughout all the great breakthroughs in communication – the invention of the telephone in 1876, the launch of the first satellite in 1957, and, ultimately, the birth of the Internet in the 60s.

Because of the increasing importance of telecommunications and information technology, particularly the Internet, it was recognized that the topic must be brought to the attention of the public. Because of this, the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) requested for the UN General Assembly in 2005 to declare the date of May the 17th as World Information Society Day. the purpose of this was to draw public attention to the importance of these technologies, as well as a number of different related economic and social issues that the summit had raised. In March 2006, the UN General Assembly resolved that World Information Society Day would indeed happen annually on the 17th of May. Nevertheless, later in the same year, it was determined in Antalya, Turkey, at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference that both celebrations would be combined as the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which a lot of people shorten to WTISD.2006年3月,联合国大会决定将每年的5月17日定为世界信息社会日。
